What is the Dorome Festival?

The Dorome Festival is centred around a “large cup chugging contest”, where participants drain generously filled cups of sake in one go. Held every April on the beach in Akaoka Town, renowned drinkers from around the world gather by the Pacific Ocean to compete. Freshly caught whitebait (juvenile sardines such as maiwashi and urume) hauled in with beach seines are served as accompaniment. From 2026, both men and women compete by drinking five go (approx. 0.9 litres), judged on speed and drinking style.
